UEFA Champions League Betting 21/22: Manchester City vs PSG Betting Preview

Written By Alex Blowers on November 22, 2021

The UEFA Champions League returns this week for Matchday 05, and one of the marquee fixtures is the ‘Petrodollar Cup‘ between Manchester City and PSG. Both clubs have been revolutionized by Middle Eastern oil money and now have a seat at the table with Europe’s elite.

These two occupy the top two spots in Group A and are separated by a point. A win for Pep Guardiola’s side will guarantee first with a game to spare. Mauricio Pochettino needs to get a big performance from his players to keep their dreams alive of winning the group.

UEFA Champions League Betting: Manchester City vs PSG Preview

Out: Kevin De Bruyne (Covid), Ferran Torres (Foot)
Doubtful: Jack Grealish (Unknown)
Suspended: Benjamin Mendy (Police Investigation)
Coach: Pep Guardiola

I expect Gabriel Jesus, Rúben Dias, and Riyad Mahrez will come into the starting lineup for Cole Palmer, John Stones, and Raheem Sterling. All three started on the bench in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Everton and will be fresh for this game. They’re the only changes Guardiola will make.

I think Phil Foden will play as a False Nine. If PSG sits deep, the ‘Stockport Iniesta‘ will be able to cause them problems with his movement between the lines, ability to operate in tight spaces, and eye for a pass.

Jack Grealish withdrew from the England squad last week with an unknown issue. He was left out of Sunday’s squad and could be fit enough for this match. Kevin De Bruyne and Ferran Torres are ruled out as they deal with their respective issues.

UEFA Champions League Betting: Manchester City vs PSG Preview

Out: Julian Draxler (Muscle)
Doubtful: Ismael Gharbi (Groin), Sergio Ramos (Calf), Presnel Kimpembe (Hamstring), Rafinha (Hip), Gianluigi Donnarumma (Gastroenteritis)
Suspended: None
Coach: Mauricio Pochettino

Keylor Navas was sent off against FC Nantes in Saturday’s 3-1 win. I’m confident he’ll keep his place after Gianluigi Donnarumma was left out of the squad after coming down with a bout of gastroenteritis. The Euro 2020 winner spoke out last week about his lack of playing time at the Parc des Princes telling TNT Sport:

“It has no effect on my performances, but it ‘disturbs’ me.”

“It’s not easy because I was used to always starting, and sometimes it hurts to be on the bench.”

Nuno Mendes, Marquinhos, and Presnel Kimpembe did not feature at the weekend and should return to the starting lineup fully rested alongside Achraf Hakimi.

Sergio Ramos is back in training and could be fit enough to make the bench. Fans are still waiting for him to make his debut, and I think they’ll have to wait a little longer. The 35-year-old has played once since March 31st, and it would be foolish to throw him into such a big game considering his recent injury struggles.

If Poch continues with Leandro Paredes and Marco Verratti in midfield, I think Idrissa Gueye will start this game. You’re going to get minimal tracking back and defensive work from Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappé. PSG needs someone who can press, win the ball, and intercept passes in the center of the pitch and Gueye excels at all of those.

When these two met on Matchday 02, PSG won, but the game played differently.

Bernando Silva should have made it 1-1 with a chance that was easier to score than miss. Manchester City controlled the game registering seven shots on target but couldn’t find a way past Donnaruuma. In the 74th minute, Messi produced his best moment in a PSG shirt to put them 2-0 up.

I’m confident this game will play out in a similar way, but with City getting the three points to win Group H. I’ve been covering PSG this season, and there’s still a lot of questions about how this team is going to play and what’s their strongest lineup.

17 of PSG’s and 13 of Manchester City’s 19 games this season have finished over 1.5 Goals, so I’m recommending adding that to boost up the odds.
