UEFA Champions League Last 16 Draw 21/22: Date, Time and How To Watch

Written By Alex Blowers on December 8, 2021

The UEFA Champions League Group Stage is over, and it has been one of the best in recent memory. Manchester City vs. Paris Saint-Germain, Atlético Madrid vs. Liverpool, Bayern Munich vs. Barcelona, Real Madrid vs. Inter Milan, and Chelsea vs. Juventus were some of the standout fixtures.

We’ve seen some big casualties with AC Milan, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, FC Porto, RB Leipzig, and Sevilla all failing to advance to the Knockout Stage.

FC Sheriff Tiraspol lit up the competition on Matchday 02. The Moldovan minnows shocked the soccer world by beating Real Madrid 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu to record the biggest result in their history.

It’s a shame UEFA has decided to scrap this format in 2024/25 and expand the competition to a single league consisting of 36 clubs playing five fixtures at home and five away. It is unknown how each club’s ten opponents will be selected and there will be an extra play-off round prior to the Last 16.

Let’s hope the magic and excitement aren’t lost.

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE LAST 16 DRAW INFO

The Last 16 draw is scheduled to take place on Monday, December 13th, 2021, at UEFA headquarters, the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland. The ceremony begins at 12:00 CET, which is 6 AM EST in the USA and will be streamed live for free on UEFA’s Website.

The draw features the 16 teams that advance from the UEFA Champions League Group Stage. The eight group winners are seeded and will play at home in the second leg of their tie. The eight group runner-ups are unseeded and will play at home in the first leg.

No team can face another opponent from the same domestic league, and teams cannot face sides they met during the Group Stage, either.

RULE CHANGE TO THE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE KNOCKOUT STAGE

UEFA announced earlier this season that the away goals rule – the team that has scored more goals “away from home” wins if the total goals scored by each team are otherwise equal – will be scrapped from the start of the 2021-22 season. If the scoreline is tied at the end of the second leg, the game will go to extra time irrespective of the number of goals each team has scored home and away.

Keep this in mind when betting on the ‘Which Team Will Progress’ market.
