Liverpool‘s rock at center-back, Virgil van Dijk, is the odds-on favorite to win PFA Player of the Year.
The award, which goes to the best player in English football, is currently held by VVD’s teammate, Mo Salah. There have been 45 total PFA Player of the Year awards given to 40 different players.
First center-back to win since…?
Typically, the award goes to a top goal scorer for a top team. However, that’s not always the case. Two years ago, N’Golo Kante, a defensive center-mid, won. Former Manchester United captain and midfielder Ryan Giggs is also a winner. However, no center-back has won the award since the 2004-05 season when Chelsea‘s John Terry was recognized as England’s best footballer.
Virgil van Dijk’s PFA Player of the odds have him as clear front-runner
VVD is list anywhere from -300 to -180 at various sportsbooks. Sergio Aguero follows as second favorite, priced much longer from +600 to +800.
Late chargers Raheem Sterling (+800) and Sadio Mane (+2000) could make it a race if they continue scored at current clips.
Last year’s winner, Mohamed Salah, is right there with Mane at +2000.
While we here at High Press Soccer like seeing the incredible season van Dijk is having being recognized, if Manchester City run away with the title, there is certainly value in either Aguero or Sterling. Their goals would be a major reason why.
