With Man City basically having one hand on the Premier League title, all Manchester United can do now is try to hold onto the second spot. After that frustrating draw vs Everton, they look to get back to winning ways against West Brom.
Sam Allardyce’s side might not be winning many games, but they did gain points out of City & Liverpool earlier this season! If United aren’t careful, they could be in for a similar embarrassment. That being said, the Red Devils have a near-flawless away record in the PL. This should really onto go one way and that involves United winning & giving their fans some Valentine’s Day love.
West Brom Likely XI
Johnstone, Maitland-Niles, Ajayi, Bartley, Townsend, Sawyers, Snodgrass, Livermore, Gallagher, Pereira, Diagne
West Brom goes into this game with a fully fit squad.
Manchester United Likely XI
De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Fred, McTominay, Bruno, Greenwood, Rashford, Cavani
Paul Pogba is United’s big absentee after hobbling off against Everton. Eric Bailly is also unlikely to feature in this due to injury.
West Brom vs Manchester United Preview
Having scored 12 goals in their last two league games, United have now scored more goals than any other team in the Premier League. However, they’ve also conceded more than any other side at the top half of the table and that is beginning to be a problem that’s weighing them down.
Fortunately, the side they face next is one of the lowest scorers in the league. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes that work in his side’s favour. But with United looking to get another dominant win, they’ll be relying on their attacking stars to produce the goods.
Edinson Cavani & Bruno Fernandes both got some much-needed rest in the FA Cup win over West Ham. They’ll be recharged & reinvigorated to run the show. With Bruno’s clever movement & brilliant tendency to pick out defining moments in the attack & Cavani’s foxy nature inside the box a perfect counter to West Brom’s defensive style, those two will be key in carving open the Baggies’ backline.
Marcus Rashford also needs to continue producing special things with his creative delivery, but must improve his composure inside the box. Similarly, Mason Greenwood also must improve his decision-making to get back to scoring ways.
Scott McTominay’s scored in his last 3 appearances & looks to continue that surprising trend by attempting bangers from afar. With the absence of Pogba, Fred’s task is to get the ball forward quicker & stop counter-attacks.
But to open up United’s attacking might, Luke Shaw & Aaron Wan-Bissaka must continue their good work. Both full-backs need to be inch-perfect to break down West Brom’s low-block defensive style with accurate crosses.
The Baggies might’ve only scored 4 goals in their last 5 PL games, but have some tricks up their sleeve to catch United off-guard. Matheus Pereira’s a real trickster with his movement & can put in deadly delivery in the box, which Mbaye Diagne can score if obliged. Big Sam’s side also possesses a big threat on the set-pieces, which United must beware of.
The only way United fall apart if their backline or David de Gea continue making mistakes. OGS must encourage his side to avoid that by dominating possession, piling on the pressure with their persistent fast-paced attacks in order to break the hosts’ spine & get another away win.
West Brom will frustrate United by parking the bus the whole game. But I feel the Red Devils still have enough quality & momentum to grind out a 2-0 win.
