The 2019-20 Premier League season has been suspended since mid-March.
There has been rampant speculation over what will happen to the season amid COVID-19 concerns. Here’s a look at where things stand.
When will the 2019-20 Premier League season restart?
No definitive time table has been set. As of now, play has been suspended through April 30th. However, the most likely scenario would have the league starting back in early June and playing through mid-July.
What will happen if the season is cancelled?
If league officials determine they cannot complete the season, the following are the most likely scenarios (in order):
- Current league standings are final: In this scenario, Liverpool win the league. Manchester City, Leicester, and Chelsea would qualify for the Champions League. However, City may be banned from the UCL for two years, meaning Manchester United would get that final spot. Bournemouth, Aston Villa, and Norwich would be relegated–although Villa have a game-in-hand that would potentially need to be played.
- The season would be voided: In this case, it would be as if the season didn’t happen. The final results from 2018-19 would carry over again into the 2020-21 season.
