The Premier League has been suspended–along with almost all major European divisions–indefinitely due to the coronavirus.
However, league clubs and officials are planning for its return. An April 3rd meeting is scheduled to potentially map out how the 2019-20 campaign will finish.
When will the Premier League return?
As of now, talk is centered around a June 1st return. Games would likely take place behind closed doors at first.
If this plan were to take place, the season would conclude in enough time not to interfere with the 2020-21 start date of August 8th.
How this may impact the summer transfer market is not yet known.
What happens if the season cannot be finished?
If COVID-19 has not been effectively contained by June 1st for league games to resume, the most likely scenario would be for the table to exist as it is. Liverpool would win the league. Bournemouth and Norwich would be sent down. Aston Villa are currently in 19th, but have a game in hand. How the league would resolve that situation is unknown at this time.
