Erling Braut Haaland is the flavour of the season in Europe. If you haven’t at least heard of him, you’re probably living inside a rock. For those uninformed, he’s a teenage Norwegian striker to have taken European soccer by storm.
With 7 goals in just 4 games at the UEFA Champions League, he sits on top of the top-scorer charts. He’s scored 26 goals in 18 appearances across all competitions, including FIVE hattricks! The boy has outscored BOTH Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals combined together, proving himself as the next big thing.
While RB Salzburg only signed him earlier this year, they’re destined to lose him soon. It probably won’t be in January with Salzburg competing for the UEFA Europa League and their own league title, but they could/will lose him in the summer. And the suitors are unlimited.
The absolute best clubs in Europe have been scouting him, with apparently 20+ clubs being interested in signing him. The 19-year-old has a decision to make which will impact his future and decide whether he does become the best striker in Europe anytime soon.
Who Needs Erling Braut Haaland The Most: Manchester United
Haaland has all the traits for being a 30+ goals a season striker. He’s coming off almost as a second-coming of the brilliant Robert Lewandowski. That being said, Manchester United are probably the ones who need a lethal centre-forward like him immediately.
Anthony Martial’s grown into the #9 role pretty well, but I don’t think just relying on him and Marcus Rashford will result in any definitive progress. Martial’s finishing is fine, but he’s too one-dimensional at times, while Rashford still lacks that cutting edge in killing chances.
United’s expected goals are much higher than what they have currently and despite creating many chances, they just don’t have that lethality to finish them. Haaland would be perfect to solve their goal-scoring issues, thriving under the timely deliveries from the likes of Paul Pogba, Daniel James or even Martial/Rashford. He’d be the 30+ goal striker they’ve missed since Wayne Rooney departed & get them competing for the top spots again.
Where He Would Fit The Best: Manchester City
There are some huge opportunities ahead for Haaland with Europe’s very best scouting him. Going to Barcelona or Real Madrid at this young of age could be career-suicide. The pressure to perform can destroy the biggest of talents. Among the clubs scouting him, Manchester City is the destination where he’d truly evolve into an even more dangerous player.
As much as their coming to dominance can be disliked, Pep Guardiola has done an astounding job in improving certain youngsters at City. The way he evolved Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane into world-class players and immersed a relentless attacking scheme which strikers genuinely enjoy playing under, he’d definitely be interested in moving to the Premier League with the club which made his dad (Alf-Inge Haaland) famous.
At City, he’d probably not play every game due to their crazy rotational schemes. But he’d gradually grow into a more complete striker, finding more creativity to his link-up play and lethality in his finishing skills. Not to forget, he’d probably get to win trophies every season as well!
Where He Will Most Likely Go: Juventus
So this might come as a bit anticlimactic, but I feel it’s going to be Juventus who eventually get the Norweigan wonderkid. Let’s look at bit of their recent expose. They signed Matthijs De Ligt right from underneath Barcelona’s nose. They snapped up Cristiano Ronaldo. They win the Serie A every single year.
In terms of powerhouses, the Bianconeri are among the absolute top. Sure, the Champions League does evade them, but perhaps signing Haaland is to overturn that curse. The Norwegian would not say no to it. Having the opportunity to play alongside Ronaldo and train under Maurizio Sarri, who would?
Juventus would give him the exposure and promotion he needs to become a world-renowned star. He’d also amplify his goal-scoring instincts knowing Sarri’s ability. Gonzalo Higuain’s nearing his end & Haaland’s an ideal replacement for him. The tactical Serie A is perfect for him to clobber in goals (just look at Romelu Lukaku), while he’ll also win medals/accolades every year.
Sorry Premier League fans, but Juventus have enough incentive to buy him for a big price next year. They’d revolve their attack around him, making sure Haaland fulfils his prophecy in becoming the best striker in the world very soon.
