Winners and Losers of the Champions League Round of 16 Draw

Written By High Press 10 on December 13, 2021

The 2021-22 Champions League Round of 16 draw happened today.

A technical glitch of some sort impacted Manchester United’s draw. Soooo…the ENTIRE draw then had to be redone three hours later.

By law, no Champions League draw can happen without multiple “winners and losers” articles published after the fact. Here’s ours.

Champions League Round of 16 draw losers

UEFA: Listen, shit happens. People make mistakes. Sure, asking “seriously though, how hard is it to get 8 group winners in the right pot” is a fair question. But UEFA does come across like a 🤡 show here too.

PSG: Not that there were many “good” match-ups for the Parisians. However, going from a beatable Manchester United draw to a much-more-difficult Real Madrid won’t do PSG any favors. That ever-elusive first UCL title may have to wait another year.

Liverpool: Go from RB Salzburg to Serie A table toppers Inter Milan. It’s never easy for the Reds, but they should be fine.

Diego Simeone’s bald spot: The stress of playing at Old Trafford won’t do Simeone’s dome any favors.

Manchester United: PSG would’ve been like playing the French version of themselves: a talented but poorly organized team. Atletico Madrid know who they are. Nobody will every accuse them of not being organized. Can Ralf Ragnick give this Man U team an identity in the next two months?

Bayern Munich: Go from drawing Atletico Madrid to “Austrian Bayern” in RB Salzburg. That’s a welcome change for any club.

Ajax: The Dutch club is set up nicely for another deep UCL run. Avoiding PSG, Inter, and Atleti was a nice win for them.

Chelsea: The only match-up the stayed the same in the redraw, Chelsea get Lille…the 11th place team…in Ligue 1. That’s like getting NYCFC.

Liverpool: Damn right! It’s never easy for the Reds. Big believer here though in having to earn your titles. Being “battle tested” is a real thing. Each win helps you grow in confidence. If Liverpool end up making it 7 European titles, it’ll be deserved.
